Chilly Nights, Warm Hearts

Martha sitting at her concierge desk

By day, Garlands concierge Martha Nielsen is a friendly source of knowledge and assistance for Garlands members and families, however, by night, weekends, and holidays, she is an international adventurer with over 120 European trips under her belt.

A former, seasoned Scandinavian Airlines Global Sales Manager, Martha retired after nearly 37 years and began a second career at The Garlands. “I thought it would be a nice way to interact with people and hopefully brighten their day.”

Was she ever right! As one Garlands member put it, “Martha is a living legend around here. She knows how to put a smile on your face.”

These days Martha makes people smile at the front desk and in the classroom as a Garlands Lifelong Learning teacher who shares her passion for travel and her deep knowledge of the Nordic countries.

Her twice sold-out audience of 140+ continues to rave about Martha’s presentation on The Icehotel above the Arctic Circle in Sweden.

As if her experiences with thermal layers, frosted bedchambers, dog sled rides, snowmobile safaris, and hand-carved ice sculptures weren’t intriguing enough, Martha says, I like to make my programs relatable and educational, so I also include fun facts and historical background that I’ve picked up along the way.”

Suffice it to say, Martha’s chilling stories and heartwarming personality are “hot stuff” at The Garlands!
