Veterans Day Luncheon and Presentation
Rescued from the bottom of an abandoned fox hole in Papua New Guinea during WWII, Smoky, the dog, served in the South Pacific with the 5th Air Force, 26th Photo Recon Squadron and flew 12 air/sea rescue and photo reconnaissance missions. Smokey earned eight battle stars and many medals for the lives she saved and for her bravery. She later brought joy and comfort to thousands of sick and injured troops, is the first recorded therapy dog, and inspired the creation of today’s therapy dog programs. Her story is really about the help, hope, and comfort she brought to veterans during war.
